About
Hi, I’m Belltoy. I write about programming, technology, and other topics that interest me. This blog is a place for me to share my thoughts, experiences, and knowledge with the world.
This blog is built using Astro and AstroPaper theme with some customizations.
I’m a Senior Software Engineer with 15+ years of experience building complex backend systems, distributed infrastructure, high-performance networked applications, and frontend development. I have a strong foundation in computer science, concurrency, distributed systems, system architecture, APIs, data processing, and production reliability.
And I have experience in designing and operating highly scalable and fault-tolerant systems, including globally distributed MQTT infrastructure supporting 100+ million concurrent connections. I have been working with Rust for many years, as well as Erlang/OTP, Elixir, Go, JavaScript, Python, and other languages.
I love exploring new ideas and learning new things, and I hope to share that passion with my readers.
Core Competencies
- Distributed Systems: Distributed architecture, fault tolerance, consistency, service discovery, coordination, high availability
- Backend Engineering: Complex applications, APIs, microservices, data processing, service integration
- Concurrency & Performance: Async I/O, high concurrency, backpressure, resource management, performance optimization
- System Architecture: Architecture design, API design, reusable components, architectural evolution, reliability and maintainability
- Data & Messaging: Kafka, HBase, etcd, ZooKeeper, MySQL, NoSQL, distributed data systems
- Network Programming: TCP/IP, HTTP, MQTT, RTMP, gRPC, connection management, network protocols
- Rust & Systems Programming: Rust, Tokio, Tonic, Erlang NIFs (FFI), eBPF

- Cloud & Infrastructure: Docker/Kubernetes, AWS, CI/CD, GitOps, observability
- Engineering Leadership: Technical mentoring, architecture reviews, engineering standards, cross-team collaboration
Some Fun Projects
I’m a big fan of Vim/Neovim and have created several plugins and tools for the community:
- tree-sitter-vrl - A tree-sitter parser for VRL, the Vector Remap Language, used in the Vector observability agent.
- vrl.vim - Vim plugin for VRL syntax highlighting and indentation.
- zed VRL support - Zed plugin for VRL syntax highlighting and indentation.
- prom.vim - Prometheus exposition format syntax for Vim/NeoVim.
- tree-sitter-prom - Prometheus’ text-based format grammar for tree-sitter
Back in 2012, I had shared some experiences about using Node.js in production. You can find the 3D presentation slides here.
